The Diplomat

Do you like watching the news on TV? If so, you will enjoy the first season of The Diplomat. No matter what source of information you prefer, you will be tracking down the guilty culprit along with the main characters of the film and will be awaiting justice.

Anticipating the events of the film, the viewer will definitely notice that the main character is so unique that it is extremely difficult to find people similar to her in real life. Kate was simply born a diplomat. She’s not like her predecessor, who always had all sorts of misunderstandings, like not wanting to wear thongs. Kate has completely different problems.

For example, she likes to solve problems with physical force (beats her husband); she doesn’t like dresses and regularly stains what she does wear; she can’t talk to the police, or anyone else, because she can’t stop herself and tells everything honestly. As she herself admits, she is sociable, not very smart, but not stupid either. And she also looks like a princess (and often slightly tipsy).

I didn’t want to watch this series after Kate’s husband’s very first phrases that she should do something for his services. It’s way below the belt. However the episode revealed another side – this is the background of what is happening. There is a portrait of Winston Churchill made from the photograph “Roaring Lion” by Yousuf Karsh. The then Prime Minister of Great Britain drives a 1967 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Roadster Series I. There is a red evening dress from Galvan London, which Kate finally wears in the last episode. The film has a huge number of works of art.

Within the framework of the script, the acting of the main characters is quite convincing. But as many have already noted, the cameo roles of servants, security, ambassadors of different countries and especially the US President add variety to the events.

The main question of the first season of The Diplomat was chosen very strangely – what does Cinderella smell like? It is obvious what a person engaged in heavy physical labor smells like. But at the same time, it becomes obvious that without magic, this Cinderella is not capable of resolving the conflict in the current circumstances. Overall, her goals are quite standard.

The film completely ignores the people who provide security for military and civilian facilities, as well as those who attack these facilities, who investigate the attack, and who suffer from all this diplomacy.

I agree with the rating of 7.5. But I will quote Einav, Dan (April 21, 2023) that the series “spurns the opportunity to provide a considered look at international relations in favour of a generic and improbably-plotted yarn” and “lacks delicacy and nuance.” The article described it as “so exaggerated that it has little to say about actual statecraft and so dry and insistently talky that it struggles to entertain.”
