Mastering Ubuntu Server

“MGM Resorts International said on Thursday a cyberattack last month that disrupted its operations would cause a $100 million hit to its third-quarter results, as it works to restore its systems”. This is a quote from CNN Business, one article about one event among(st) many that happened in the last three/in recent years. Like other articles it doesn’t provide a lot of information about threat sources or solutions, there are no technical details. Just a summary of the results: operational costs and reputation losses. Of course I am not much of a fan/follower of financial news. I got this information from the Enterprise Linux Security podcast of Jay LaCroix and JoaCorreiaCl. They usually take two pieces of news for each/to make a 40 minute podcast and try to find something important related to/concerning cyber security. It is not a  deep dive into the problem. You might hear something like “you must reboot your computer.” Well, this can/might just provide the solution. But I can never imagine all possible types of things that my colleagues may do with their infrastructure. I really need as many varieties of solutions as possible. This podcast gives me a lot of very good solutions that I can use in different situations. I can say more about it later. I watched Jay’s video about CentOS and different file systems three years ago – it was interesting. I used his instructions in my work testing environments.

I like Jay and what he does. So I decided to read his book Mastering Ubuntu Server. I read most of it with great pleasure even though there is nothing new for me, except for the US Cloud Services. I usually work with the hardware of my clients or services of local data centers. Everywhere I have contracts that do not allow me to use popular providers like Amazon or GitHub. I have to do it all myself or together with my team. But the main Jay problem is repetition of the same words, ideas, a thousand times. The last two chapters look like he wants to reach 600 pages at any cost. I know if you encounter something new you need a couple of explanations of the same thing, but Jay does it more than ten times, so actually the book can be one third as long. If you are beginner in Linux I definitely recommend Jay YouTube channel to you, his website and the book. If you want some discussion about Cyber Security he has the podcast where at least you can find a link to the latest news in the description if you don’t want to watch the whole video
